October 20, 2022

Abdulaziz Saud Albabtain Cultural Foundation launched the events of "Diwan of Arab Poetry" the day before yesterday evening, with the presence of several young poets from Kuwait and the Arab world, as well as enthusiasts of poetry and the Arabic language. The event took place at Albabtain Central Library for Arab Poetry.

The Chairman of the Foundation, poet Abdulaziz Albabtain, stated during the opening speech that the phrase "Poetry is the Diwan of the Arabs" has been his guiding principle since the establishment of the Foundation, which was initially named "Abdulaziz Saud Albabtain Award for Poetic Creativity."

He explained that the Foundation's name was changed in 2015 to reflect its expanded scope beyond poetry, venturing into broader and diverse fields beyond poetry awards. He emphasized that the Foundation will continue to support Arab poetry and remain a promoter of intercultural and intercivilizational dialogue, while advocating for a culture of just peace among nations and states.

He emphasized that he will not hesitate "to do everything necessary to preserve the pioneering role of poetry, so that poets can regain the status they used to enjoy during their prosperous eras." He also clarified that poetry is the heartbeat of hearts, the expression of emotions, a portrayal of life, the voice of the world, a message of humanity, and its hope in solving its crises through its creative visions and ideas, perhaps not accessible to those outside the realm of poetry and poets.

He stated, "If the literati in the West and the East have literary salons where they gather, then let the Arab poets in Kuwait have a poetry diwan that brings them together." He added, "And if each of the historic houses in Kuwait has its own diwan where they gather on a designated day, then let poetry have its diwan in Albabtain Library, where poets gather on the third Tuesday of every month."

He further highlighted that "The Diwan is a place for all Arab poets to share their experiences and creations, discuss their issues, and present their perspectives, far from anything that might lead to division."

He said, "Poetry unites and doesn't divide, and the cultural foundation is purely dedicated to preserving our nation's heritage and its sacred values, while elevating the status of its authentic Arabic language to keep it enriched with its familiar beauty through poetry that is deeply rooted in the heritage and cultural memory of our nation."

Abdulaziz Albabtain called on "all poets to join this diwan, to let their poetic voices be heard by poetry enthusiasts and appreciators, through the poems and new creations they possess, expressing themselves and others, captivating their minds, expanding their hearts and souls."

On this occasion, a number of young Kuwaiti and Arab poets recited various poetic verses in the setting of the Arab Poetry Diwan, creating a beautiful atmosphere.
