Dr. Wijjdan Al-Sa’egh

Born in Baghdad in 1967

Obtained a Master's degree with excellent grades in 1992 from the University of Mosul, with a thesis titled "The Visual Imagery in the Poetry of Omar Abi Risha." 

She also received her PhD from the same university in 1995, with a very good grade, for her dissertation titled "The Metaphorical Imagery in the Poetry of Al-Akhtal Al-Saghir."


She obtained a diploma in Media Studies from the University of Colorado, USA, in 2001; her general specialization is Arabic Language and Literature, with a specific focus on Modern Arabic Poetry and Critical Approaches.

She has been working as a university professor since 1992.

She supervised several Master's theses, including "Character Portrayal in the Literature of Mohammed Al-Sharafi," "The Inherited in the Poetry of Hassan Al-Sharafi," and "Poetry of Amarah Al-Yamani: Stylistic Analysis" at the Faculty of Arts, Dhamar University, in 2005-2006.

She has discussed numerous Master's theses, including "An Analysis of the Poetry of Mohammed Abdou Ganem" at the Faculty of Arts, University of Aden, and "Al-Hakkak's Diwan: Compilation and Study" at the Faculty of Arts, Dhamar University, in 2005-2006.

Her poems and studies have been published in various Arab and local journals.

She currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the New Poetry Journal at the Middle East Studies Department, Michigan, USA.

She also holds the position of Editor-in-Chief of the “Arab Newspaper” at the Middle East Studies Department, University of Michigan, USA.

Al-Afif Cultural Award for Literature, Sana'a, April 2003, for her book "The Throne and the Hoopoe: Interpretive Approaches to the Rhetoric of the Image in Contemporary Yemeni Poetic Discourse."

Her book "Lotus Flower" was selected for distribution at the Bahraini Cultural Forum's celebration in their new headquarters, January 2002.

Her critical career was honored with her receiving a shield from the Foundation of the Arab Intellectuals, Cairo, 2004.

She served as a poetry judge for the Yemeni Republic President's Award in 2004, 2005, and 2006.

She also served as a member of the Al-Awais Poetry Judging Committee for the years 2015 and 2016.
